The House That Keith Built

Gingerbread house, that is. In the recent Random Bites post, I told of the baking of the gingerbread that would become the foundation of the sugared structure. Keith, a longtime gingerbread house builder, put on the finishing touches and it looks mah-velous. I was bummed that my work hours prohibited my participation in this part, but the K-Man dutifully documented the decorating process.

The Royal Icing recipe was included in that post and again, it acts as the glue that holds this candied cabin together. The icing also added decorative touches as hanging icicles and with coloring, became pine trees and shrubbery. Keith uses paste coloring instead of water coloring as the water coloring runs. Various sweet treats played a big role in the decor. M & Ms line the walkway, peppermint candies and sticks border the "property" and gumdrops make for fine holiday lights over the doorway. The roof is made of shredded wheat which will get a dusting of powdered sugar to create a snowy effect. The house will join the rest of the gingerbread village at the Elms and I'll get photos of those up soon...

  2. How cool. The house looks fantastic. And I concur with Krystallina--the pine tree is perfect!! I also love the "paved" walkway....what an amazing amount of tedious work is involved. Someone was in the store recently talking about the process of creating these and I was so intrigued because I didn't realize how much time and effort it takes to actually design and build them. It's architecture in the kitchen. Kudos to Keith!

    Miss ya.
