Fried Green Goodness
We FINALLY got the opportunity to get back in the kitchen and cook up some grub tonight! The schedule has been a bit punishing but has finally opened up. We got to those gorgeous green tomatoes and fried em' up Southern style. I found a Food Network recipe from the Neelys, the First Couple of Southern Cooking. The recipe got nothing less than 5-star reviews from every person who commented. The accompanying sauce also had a fascinating mix of ingredients including buttermilk, apple cider and barbeque sauce. Two things we ended up doing differently.....
I was supposed to heat and reduce apple cider mixed with brown sugar. Went a little too long and some of it got a little gloppy so we substituted a touch of molasses. Also, the recipe naturally suggests we use the Neely's BBQ sauce. We used what we had available...KC Masterpiece and it worked fine. These tomatoes were marvelous and the dipping sauce....amazing...such flavor. The only thing missing was Mary Louise Parker. Good stuff.
This recipe was one of many I found. I put some feelers out there for a decent fried green tomato recipe on Facebook and got an amazing response. I also received recipes for tomato relishes and jams that sound awesome as well. As each recipe arrived, I would get a little piece of family food history as well. Now THAT's what I'm talkin' about.
