Foodie Five # 3 - Emma Lamb
Emma was a dear friend of mine growing up in my hometown of St. Marys, WV. Since reconnecting with her, I've discovered she has been quite the world traveler. She now lives with her family in Waterloo, Belgium.
1.) So, darlin'...do you have any food memories of our hometown?
We seldom ate in SM as we usually preferred a local diner in Parkersburg. We always had open-faced roast beef sandwiches.
2.) Is there a favorite meal or food in your household?
We love Soto Ayam. It is an Indonesian chicken soup. You start with the boiled chicken and broth. Then you throw in rice, boiled potatoes, tomatoes, bean sprouts, cabbage and just about anything you want. If you want it spicy, add Sambola. You also take fresh corn from the oob, add egg and flour and make corn croquettes.
3.)If I were to come visit you in Waterloo where would you take me to sample the local cuisine?
A restaurant on Chaussee de Bruxelles called "Les Six Colonnes" that serves a pot full of mussels. "Mussels from Brussels"-you have to have them.
4.) You're a world traveler. This will be tough to narrow down...what have been some of your standout food experiences during your travels?
The one experience that will always stay with me is a dinner on our honeymoon in Sao Paulo. It is similar to "Fogo de Chao" restaurants that serve your beef entree with tableside service. They cut the meat right at your table. It had great wines and a fantastic salad. Also, I had these fantastic fruit crepes in the Austrian restaurant in Guatemala. They were so good; especially with whipped cream.
5.) What is your ultimate comfort food?
Creme Brulee!
Thanks, Emma! So good to be back in touch with you...

Great post Greg. Truly wonderful hearing from Emma! I wondered where she'd gone. I specifically loved her comment about "the Austrian restaurant in Guatamela." Food definitely knows no borders. And Emma, if you are reading this check out Greg's playlist. I added some old halftime show band songs from our high school days. Take care all!
