Our Little Corner of Planet Barbecue

Saturday afternoon we attended the Steven Reichlen talk and book signing event at our Barnes and Noble store. Reichlen is the host of the PBS show Primal Grill and has written a slew of best-selling BBQ books including The Barbecue Bible. He was promoting his newest book Planet Barbecue which features a history and worldwide tour of barbecue. He was witty and gracious and signed our copy of his book. He told intriguing tales of his travels including how he found foods being grilled in various countries that he wouldn't have thought possible such as ice cream and rice.

Inspired, it wasn't long before we returned to our own grill. We grilled pork steaks with a poultry seasoning and six-pepper rub and marinated them in a sauce of KC Masterpiece Honey Smoke barbecue sauce, butter and a touch of apple cider vinegar. We constantly babied our steaks with turning and brushing with the sauce every few minutes. Oh, the aroma.....wow.

We also had our first "harvest", and hit our gardens for some of our own spinach and gourmet lettuce blends for a wonderful salad with red and yellow peppers, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers. That fresh lettuce was fantastic...bright, sharp, peppery....it made for an incredible salad.

We also tried out our savory lemon-pepper chevre that we picked up from the farmer's market with some crackers and it was delicious. Throw in some peaches and cream corn on the cob and.... oh yeah, it's summer.
